When watering pot plants, Tammy advises to always water deeply. You want to make sure the water is being absorbed by the soil so that the roots can access it as they need. If you notice the water running out the bottom of the pot very quickly, then it’s a sign the soil has become hydrophobic. This means the soil is repelling water instead of absorbing it. This happens over a period of time when the organic matter in the potting mix breaks down and forms a waxy coating. To remedy this, either repot the plant into fresh soil or add some wetting agent.
Small pots that have dried out can benefit from being dunked in a bucket of water. Watch for bubbles rising to the surface because this indicates that the water is displacing the air in the soil. You will know the soil is evenly moist once the bubbles stop. This is a handy method to use before transplanting as it will help the roots come out easier and ensure they recover quickly.
