Also, you could re use any old container which makes in a really fun and interactive project to make with kids!
STEP BY STEP TERRARIUM:
– Get a large, clear glass container with a lid. If your container doesn’t come with one then you can order a clear acrylic disc cut to size. It’s important the lid has holes so the bugs can breath.
– Add a few inches of drainage to the container
– On top of that add a few more inches of terrarium soil. Terrarium soil should be gritty and water retentive. You can use a desert and cacti mix with added worm castings and coir.
– Add a piece of cork bark in the centre. This gives the bugs places to hide and the climbing plants something to grow on. Cork is naturally mold resistant and will take a long time to break down in the humidity of the terrarium
– Add your terrarium plants. Larger ones go at the back and smaller ones at the front. We’ve used Nephrolepis ferns, Oak leaf fig, lance leaf fig, java moss and Pilea glauca.
– Top dress the plants with worm castings. This will feed the plants and also add beneficial microfauna to the terrarium
– Because we are adding bugs, it’s important to replicate their home as closely as possible so adding a generous amount of leaf litter will help them settle.
– The leaf little will rot down over time adding body to the substrate and providing a long term food source for the bugs.
– Gently add your bugs into the terrarium. We’ve used: Cubaris murina woodlice, Desmoxytes planata millipedes, Oxychilus alliarius snails and Barbosella dusennii springtails. All from @micro.exotics
– Drill some holes in the lid of your terrarium and place it on top of the container.
– Place the terrarium somewhere bright but out of direct sun. A north facing window is ideal but better yet is to use a grow light. Warm white bulbs work fine.
